Bugs / Re: Unable to pass the Panama Canal with the Sun Princess ...

Nothing happens now, because Paul is on the road.

Try following: Go back to sea a few miles, choose course to a Lake Gatun, and set constant speed.
In the navigation chart double click Lake Gatun, where you want to take over your ships control, and note the time to get there.
Then close Ships2 simulation properly, and wait until this time has elapsed.
The Channel Pilots will take care of your ship during this time.
Login to the simulation again, and continue your journey.
You will certainly have to do this a couple of times during journey.

What's new about my hanging problem at the entrance to the Panama Canal with the Sun Princess?

Improvements / Wind indication
« Last post by Sowosamma on December 17, 2016, 06:15:31 am »
Wind indication is not (yet) implemented right.

When sailing with true wind zero, then apparent wind is always shown incorrectly as the half value of the speed over ground (SOG). Direction indication is always ok then. The wrong value may come from the wind speed of 16 kts, that was set as a constant in earlier times?

When cruising with wind of 8 kts from 10°, which you get in Gothenburg and keep everywhere, different results are obtained.

Wind 8 kts from 10°, ship's HDG 190°, i.e. going with the wind
ship's speed SOG (kts)         0     5       10     16     20
aparent wind speed (kts)     8     5,4      3        0      2
Aparent wind speed should be the magnitude of the subtraction of real wind from SOG.

Wind 8 kts from 10°, ship's HDG as indicated

wind from    SOG    wind kts
ahead         20         18     expected 28
portside      22         13     expected 23.4
stb side      22         13     expected 23.4
astern        22           3     expected 14

This is for your records.

For coming projects also check

Best regards
Improvements / Compass
« Last post by Sowosamma on December 16, 2016, 05:02:36 am »
The axis of the compass seems to be shifted. When steering exactly 270°, West and East don't aline (see first picture). This is irrelevant if you can use an electronic compass. But ships without electronic compass must be controlled by compass itself, and then it is confusing when West and East are not on a line (see second picture). Especially when wind indicators cover the numbers, for example 10°, you must use the opposite side 190° to set the right course.

Tips and tricks and photos / Wintertime on Greenland
« Last post by Sowosamma on December 16, 2016, 04:06:54 am »
Hello all
My journey from Göteborg over Scotland, Färöer, and Iceland led me to Greenland, where I visited the City Nuuk (the old Godthåb). Then in the Nuuk Fjord, suddenly came ice. Stena Brittanica almost stuck there, but we managed to get free, and could continue the journey. It's cold here! See the pictures.

General Discussion / CPU - Cooking
« Last post by Sowosamma on December 07, 2016, 07:31:06 am »
While Ships2Career ran on my computer, I was noticed by loud noise of the fans on a relatively high CPU load. In the following, I investigated which states of the simulation cause CPU and memory loads, and how they are affected by different browsers. For comparison, my standard Firefox browser and the Edge browser, delivered with the operating system, were available.

To get comparable data, I booted the computer before testing different browsers every time, cleared cookies, and emptied the cache. The simulation always ran with the same ship, at the same position, at the same speed.

It turned out that there is no difference between 'full screen' and 'windowed' within the same browser, there is no difference between 'Map View' and 'Satellite View'. But in 'Tracking Mode' a higher CPU load is to be noted, because the whole map must be moved (which also depends on the zoom factor). Even when I quickly moved the map over a larger area manually, no higher load was found than in the 'Tracking Mode'.

There is a clear difference, however, among the different browsers, whereas Ships2Career in Firefox generates 30 - 40% CPU load, the edge browser is satisfied with 13 - 20%.

The data:
Computer: Terra, with Intel i5-3570K @ 3.4 GHz, 64 bit, 8GB RAM,
OS: Windows 10 Home, version 1607, Build14393.447
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660

Firefox 50.0.1
Edge 38.14393

Anonymous mode
Stena Brittanica, outside the port of Dover, at full speed, course 135 °

Free Mode     Tracking Mode     manually moved     Memory
Firefox      30%              40%                    40%                       450 MB
Edge        13%              20%                    20%                       160 MB

This shows how different HTML code is implemented in the different browsers.
I also did other tests with both browsers and got quite different results, with Edge gaining a small advantage. It was tested with Penguin Mark, Basemark, BMark, CanvasMark, and AnTuTu HTML5 test. In addition, I looked to the kernels, and saw totally different loads on them.

Has anyone had similar experiences, or even figures for comparison?

Is the Ships2 code uniform, or optimized for specific browsers?

Or does nobody wants to be bored with this stuff?
