First try
« on: August 31, 2016, 01:20:04 pm »
I'm playing on a Samsung Galaxy A tablet in the Chrome browser.
I tried the first mission where the object is to follow the blue line out of the harbour.
The game asks me to use the up and down arrow keys to get the boat moving, but I don't seem to have any playing on a tablet.
I eventually figured out that I could move the horizontal lever in the middle of the hub. It was very difficult to make subtle adjustments this way, but it did get things moving.
Once the boat had moved a bit, I tried to drag the map to centre the boat again. This did work, but I noticed that both the boat and the blue line followed my "dragging" until I let go and then snapped back to the place it should be.
When I reached the point where the blue line turns right, the boat immediately started turning left (I suspect there's probably a more correct nautical term than "left," but I don't know it). I was able to correct this a little by turning the steering wheel (yeah, thats not the proper name either) all the way to the right, but then all controls seemed to become unresponsive or at least completely arbitrary. The boat also started to go slower at this point.
I tried 3 times with the same result.

Thanks for trying the game.

Yes, the instructions fail to include touch screens sometimes. I look into that. Mind you, the game is best played with a mouse.

I posted some instructions on how to deal with lever adjustment.
http://ships2career.createaforum.com/tips-and-tricks-and-photos/adjusting-levers-and-knobs-on-touch-screens/msg7/#msg7

I am thinking to incorporate such instructions in the first lesson as well.

Initially in Lesson one you are not given control then gradually as the lesson progresses you are given control over the helm and other functions. So before the first turn you have no rudder control at all.

As for the dragging issue. Sadly that is Google's fault. On mobile devices I have no way of knowing where the map ends up when you drag it. Only once the map pan / drag is complete am I able to place the ship and other added features in the correct position.

Another issue yet to be sorted out is multi touch control. Did you by any chance use two fingers? The program gets itself in a bind sometimes and keeps showing the red drag arrows no matter what you do.

If you play lesson one again, read the onscreen instructions as it plays. The lesson looks to see if you increased power and then proceeds to set it automatically to the correct level.
When the lesson sets the initial turn, it also increases power somewhat as turning takes more energy.

You are asked to center the wheel (Called "helm") when the lesson sees the ship is pointing in the right direction. A double tap on the helm quickly centers it.

I suppose I will need more training material for that first lesson.

Still no luck I'm afraid.
The double tap centre thing is a neat trick to know, but I don't yet need it for the rudder, because even if I turn it all the way to the right the boat still doesn't turn enough to follow the blue line. In fact, after the initial slight turn which is initiated by the game, it seems to me like I lose control altogether. I can still set speed, but no amount of turning the rudder seems to make the boat turn in any direction.
I used two fingers to zoom in and out, but only one to manipulate controls.

So I presume the ship hits the shore on its left?  Can you attach a screenshot?

Are you able to video the screen with another device?

One think to try is to clear the browser cache to make sure there is no old stuff around. Shouldn't really be the case.

Are you using any Bluetooth or wired input devices? If so. Turn off blue tooth or unplug the input devices.

There is a game device api build in that should be unused.

Tomorrow I will whip up a troubleshoot page with a button for you to click. This will wipe out all stored values for the game.

Have you tried the second lesson? Does that one work or do you have the same trouble?

I figured it out!
Or rather; you were right all along.
I had somehow gotten the impression that I was supposed to do something during that very first turn, and when the boat didn't act like I had expected, I probably made far too aggressive turns on the rudder with very strange results, like the boat actually beginning to sail backwards and such.
Anyway, I get it now and am safely on my way from Antwerpen to Rotterdam with what looks to be a lovely pile of coal.
Please delete this thread as it was clearly not a bug but merely my own incompetence.

No not incompetent. Clearly lesson one wasn't proving enough information. I will limit the steering for the single sternleg prop to 90 degrees each way just for that lesson to avoid confusing backward motion and add more training info. Thanks for sticking with it.
